Careers Event – Worktree

Today some of our Year 7 students got the opportunity to hear about different careers that involve Maths.

Worktree’s Sam Tarbit did a fantastic job facilitating this virtual careers event. She introduced the students to the event, got them thinking about questions they could ask employers before giving them a quick employment quiz.

Employers then joined the event, and we heard from a variety of sectors:

  • Tia a Communicator from Mears
  • Catherine a Tactical Manager form Volkswagen Group
  • Claudia an Employment Solicitor from Dentons
  • Nick a Software Engineer from Xero
  • Brian an Environment Engineer from NHBC

Students got the opportunity to ask the employers questions about their careers; students came up with some great questions. Students learnt what algorithms are and some of the careers and areas they can be used in. Students then got to experience what it meant to work under pressure with the ‘Quick Fire Round’. Employers had just 20 seconds to answer the student’s questions, if they went passed the time they got a forfeit question.

The final round saw employers giving students tips for now and the future. They suggested things like joining a club or group such as the Scouts, Cadets or a sporting club to give them a bit extra when it comes to applications. They suggested students worked on becoming ‘well rounded’ individuals so that people want to work with them even if they don’t have all of the requirements of the job description. Some fantastic advice from employers for our students to take on board.

A big thank you to Sam Tarbit from Worktree and the sponsors the NHBC for this wonderful opportunity.
